Speakers for Kamloops
Posted by Laurie in What's New on August 24, 2009
Dan Scuka of Scuka Enterprises in Kelowna, and Gery Warner of Tentnology in Surrey have just been added to the slate of guest speakers for the Leadership Tactics forum in Kamloops on September 30th.
I’ll be talking to them both later this week to get more information on their businesses and some of the challenges they’ve faced over the years.
By the way, this is an afternoon-evening event that will run from 1:30 – 7:30 p.m. Kari Yuers, CEO of Kryton Enterprises and LMDC president, will deliver the keynote over dinner. We are working with our local partners, the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, to organize this event which is being held at the Kamloops Convention Centre.

New tools for employers

We’ve just added a new tool to our website. “An Employer’s Guide: Quick Links to Hiring Foreign Workers” provides quick and easy access to information on recruiting, training and retaining foreign-trained workers. The guide is an initiative of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce (one of the LMDC’s partners) and the Ministry of Economic Development and is part of the B.C. Government’s WorkBC strategy.
To access the Guide, visit our Tools page and click on the link to Other resources.
Successful kick-off to the speaker series

The event in Nelson yesterday went well, despite a stressful start to the day.
I phoned Ron first thing in the morning to make sure everything was on schedule, only to learn that the weather wasn’t looking good. He was already in Nelson, but the three main speakers were still in Vancouver. They’d been booked to fly out on the 7:35 a.m. flight to Castlegar, which ended up being canelled at the last minute because of fog. Meanwhile, we hadĀ 75+ people signed up for the event which was set to start at 1 p.m.
It turns out that the Castlegar airport is notorious for its iffy weather conditions, making it difficult for planes to land. After some scrambling on the phone with an Air Canada agent – who was very pleasant, by the way – all three guest speakers were able to get on the next flight out at 11 a.m. It was 1:30 by the time they got to Nelson, so they were only half an hour late.
Leadership lesson No. 3,453: When travelling in rural British Columbia, leave plenty of time to catch the next flight out or, as a last resort, calculate how long it would take to drive from point A to point B.
